Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round League Cup tie against Newcastle.
