The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's True Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
