The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
