A minimum of 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.

The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
